How do I know which air con gas I require for my car?
This is the most common question we get asked about vehicle air-conditioning – there are two types of gas.
- R134a gas – most vehicles manufactured before 2017 use this gas.
- R1234YF gas – since January 2017, most vehicles air-conditioning system will utilise the new R1234YF refrigerant, introduced as a more environmentally friendly version.
- If the vents are blowing less air than usual there may be a leak in the system which will need detecting, resealing, and gassing.
- If a certain vent is blowing a lot more cold air than normal, or others less so, this may be due to a blockage that will need removing in order to improve the efficiency of the aircon unit.
Just in case you were wondering, you can’t switch between gases. The port on your car will only fit the correct type of air con gas for your vehicle, so we can’t accidentally recharge R1234YF to a car that requires R1234a gas or vice versa.
Does my Air Con need recharging? What’s the difference between an air con recharge, air con regas, air con top up and an air-con service? Here’s all you need to know.
Car and van manufacturers recommend you recharge your air conditioning system at least every 2 years. Did you know your car permeates between 10-15% of the gas from the system every year – even when it’s not being used? Checking the air-conditioning system is not part of the MOT test or a standard car service, so it’s important that you remember to have it checked and recharged regularly. An easy way to remember, is to link it to your cars’ major service every two years.
A recharge, regas or top-up for your air conditioning is just different terminology for the same process. During your vehicles’ aircon regas/recharge/top-up, we remove any residual gas and carry out an air-conditioning leak detection process as standard (described in more detail below). New refrigerant gas is then added to take it up to manufacturers recommended levels.
Air Conditioning Leak Detection – carried out on every car
To provide you with the best possible air-con service, unlike other garages, we use UV detection dye as standard on every vehicle booked in for air-con recharge, re-gas or top-up. Other garages may charge you extra for this facility, we do it for free.
The process injects dye into your air conditioning system, then using UV light, the dye will be seen clearly, making it possible for our technicians to find leaks that could otherwise be missed.
This also allows us to check whether your system is holding the pressure vacuum. If your aircon system won’t hold the pressure, it is not possible to put the dye in or regas/recharge your aircon and further investigation will be required to find the problem. You will also be provided with a printout of the procedure and its results.
What is a Car Air Conditioning Service?
Regular servicing of your car air conditioning system is as essential as the regular maintenance of the rest of your car.
Initial system test assesses cabin temperature and system pressures. The system components are then checked such as hoses, belts, condenser, compressor, fans, electrics, as well as internal system controls, flaps, heating, etc. Any existing refrigerant is recovered from the system. Vacuum A/C system for a minimum of 30 minutes. Regas A/C system with refrigerant to vehicle specific refrigerant quantity, then a final system test is carried out.
During an aircon service, it is also a good time to have an air conditioning clean done too.
Air Conditioning Clean
Got a nasty smell coming from your car air conditioning? Unpleasant odours are caused by bacteria, mould and funghi which naturally build up over time in the aircon system, even more so after long periods without use. Booking an antibacterial air-conditioning clean, also known as an aircon debug, will eradicate 99% of bacteria and leave your air con smelling fresh again.
If your car aircon has not been used for a while, for example, over the winter or during lockdown, you may find a musty or unpleasant smell comes out of your air vents when used for the first time. An air conditioning anti-bacterial clean will remove bacteria from the system and help prevent its future build-up, keeping your car fresher for longer.
